What is this? Anyone? I don’t think its the red-shouldered hawk that I usually see around here. Some kind of eagle?

Hey Chris, in this one (if you go to the large version of this on the flickr) you can actually see the ONE feather in it’s tail that is yellow.

The hawk was all, “You again?”

And I was all, “You’re getting predictable.”

Then he was all, “I can eat your face off.”

So I was all, “You’re more afraid of me than I am of you.”

And he said, “Wanna bet?”

And I said, “No.”

He’s a blue-collar red-headed woodpecker. If you click on this in the flickr and choose the large size you can see the woodchips flying. The size of that hole is crazy. I had a picture of him with his head in the hole, but it was too blurry to post.

The Bluebird of Judgement.

He’ll give you a look of disdain and say something like, “I hated Justin Bieber first.” or “Did Helen Keller pick out your clothes?”

For the love. I keep telling myself that this will NOT become a bird blog because

1. i hate birds and

2. no one wants to read about birds.

But the problem is that I’ve run out of dragonflies over here what with the changing of the seasons. So the only thing to capture with my camera on my walks now is squirrels and birds. The most abundantly boring animals on the planet. Plus, they’re much harder to snag a pic of, not only are the afraid of me, but when Roxie comes with me then they scatter like crazy. She doesn’t give a damn about the birds, but she does love to chase squirrels. I’m not sure what she’d do with one if she ever caught one. She’d probably be all, “Wait, is that what these things are? Gross.”

So these menacing birds are the only thing around at the moment; we’ll have to make do.

You see this terrible picture? The bird in it is a Northern Flicker (can also be called a Yellow-shafted Flicker), a type of woodpecker.
What’s crazy about this woodpecker is that it’s actually the state bird of Alabama. Yes, I know, that’s not what they call it down here though. They call that thing the Yellowhammer. Please note the severe lack of yellow on that bird. There’s yellow on it somewhere, just, you know, not where you can see it.

Normally I hate birds, right? But c’mon, no one hates birds of prey.  They are badsass awesome.

This one is on top of a score board at the ballfields at Snake Bite Pond (or for you birdwatchers out there: The Vivian Lee Maddox Sports Complex, it was the field closest to the cemetery.) There are more pics on the flickr, just click that pic and you’re there.

Anyway, I’m no kind of bird lover, so I don’t usually know what kind of bird I’m looking at other than say, a pidgeon, a robin, an American crow (of which there are tons in RBC), blue jay (obvs.), cardinal, that kind of thing. So let me give proper recognition to  Outdoor Alabama for helping me pick out which badass bird of prey this was.

Popsicle has decorated the suit of armor for Halloween.

But merely dressing up the armor for holidays is not enough for my father. Nay, he’s an envelope pusher, a line crosser, a sick man. He has also added to the knight a gold lamé scrotum. He made it out of plastic Easter eggs filled with pennies and an old purse he bought at a thrift store. Those of you who know my father are probably wondering why it took him so long to make a ball sac for the armor. It was the lamé, he needed the perfect material. A picky one, that Popsicle.

My father, who is a clever man, has made the scrotum retractable, you know, in case children or… foreign dignitaries come over. So while he is a sick guy, he’s also responsible. And in case you were wondering about the schlong that’s missing, worry not, he’s working on that as well, and it will be magnitized for quick removal, you know, for the children and the dignitaries.

Hmm, some Norwegian fiction. It wasn’t crime fiction.

This book starts out great. I was intrigued by the story. It’s about this guy, Arvid, who becomes a communist (and a Maoist) and how he interacts with his mother. And then as he gets older and had a family of his own… blah blah blah.

Actually, that sounds boring as hell doesn’t it?

It wasn’t boring, really. It was probably a bit too introspective for my taste, but I thought it was good writing. The story had a good pace to it, and the flashbacks (of which there are many) were well done. The problem I had with this book is Arvid. At first he’s a young man and kind of idealist or whatnot, in that Young Man in College kind of way, but as he gets older it’s like he’s not getting any more mature, and he’s very selfish.

At the end the only thing I could say was, “What a piece of shit.” This is my opinion of Arvid, not the book. Although the ending of the book is quite abrupt and answers no questions in this very annoying, “Way to write and publish half a book there, champ.” Which is frustrating because it IS a good book, and its very well written, it’s just incomplete.

I plan to read more by this author.
