oh, i can “turn” a phrase…
Category: dribblings
…turn it into MAGIC.
i get phrases stuck in my head. they just stick there in a loop. sometimes it’s a bit of a song. other times it’s quote from a movie/tv show. sometimes it’s two phrases that have nothing to do with each other that get hitched up or melted together in my head, and they become one strange and very, very, very useless phrase.
one was so long and useless that i had to call up my best pal, laura, and tell her about it.
“hi!”
“hey! so anyway, i have to tell you something.”
“okay.”
“i have this phrase in my head. i can’t get it out.”
“okay.”
“so i’m thinking if i say it out loud to someone else it will… i don’t know… lose it’s power.”
“okay.”
“but i have to warn you, it’s a stupid phrase. it makes no sense. it’s… well, it’s embarrassing.”
“okay.”
“right. so here it is: “contributing to the delinquency of this fully armed and operational battlestation.””
“oh. wow.”
“i know.”
“that is quite…”
“useless. i know. but i can’t stop saying it over and over in my head.”
“you know who would like that?”
“who?”
“chris.”
“*gasp* hey, you’re right!”
and blah blah blah blah.
since then i’ve had two more stupid phrase combos in my noggin. none quite as long as that one though.
one was: “speak now or for amber waves of grain.” the other one must have been even more stupid because i’ve forgotten it.

in other really useless junk in my brain:
last night i dreamt that i won an award for discovering that the numbers between the numbers on any given sudoku puzzle (yes, that’s right. the numbers between the numbers. the sudoku fractions. on the lines? yes. THOSE “numbers”. and WHAT THE HELL DID I EAT LAST NIGHT?) right, where was i? an award. i won an award for discovering that the numbers between the numbers on a sudoku puzzle (the lines, basically) all held values of ectoplasmic polarity.
what the hell is ectoplasmic polarity?
shit. i’m inventing science IN MY SLEEP, BITCHES.

So I just had to google for “ectoplasmic polarity.” Wow. What the hooping heck are you reading?!
i haven’t googled ectoplasmic polarity. because i didn’t think it was actually anything. you mean it’s something? i am so badass in my dreams.
Two other hits, aside from your site. One of them is some oddness about the link between animal spirit ectoplasm levels and the 1929 stock market- I think it’s intended to be a very obscure Keynesian economics joke (it cites Ghostbusters as a source). The other is from a transgender fantasy story. I’m sure you’ll be gratified to know that your weblog entry has already become the number one hit on the topic, though.
transgender fantasy story? perfect. remember when the internet was new and you could search for something like, say, ectoplasmic polarity, and you’d get 0 results?
those were simpler times. hee.
There really ought to be a game like that. (There probably is, actually, but I’m drawing a blank- how would you google for it?) Each player picks a short phrase (two or three words) and google it. The winner is the one with the fewest hits. At the end of the game, be sure and post all of the searched phrases, thus inspiring players of future games to be original, since they’d be guaranteed at least one extra hit the next time. As common as laptops and web enabled phones are, this could be turned into a board game, kind of like those games that use a DVD, etc. Maybe each space has different rules, like “two words only” or “must involve a color.” I don’t know how you’d handle movement. Maybe you do a reverse race to the end. The winner is the last one to cross the finish line. Maybe some spaces have special instructions, like “Beat them All- if you win, you move three steps back, if you lose move forward three steps.” The fewest hits each round moves backward one, while the losers move forward according to where they fall (second least hits stays, next moves one, next moves two, etc), with ties defaulting to the best case for the player. I don’t know how you decide whose turn it is- I suppose just clockwise each round. Still nebulous, but it could be done. Hrmn. Kind of makes me wish Cheapass Games was still around.
“contributing to the delinquency of this fully armed and operational battlestation.”
You’re fast becoming the coolest person I know. Congratulations.
CZ, i love that game. name it. also, a drinking game version. i was trying to think of a way to make it really portable. like even having an online board or something printable so you wouldn’t even have to have the game with you to play. it could be spontaneous! we’re sitting on a goldmine! again!
T, aw thanks. the coolest of dozens!
[…] again the phrase fairy has been in my head and you’re gonna love […]
