Dragonfly
Category: dribblings
when we were kids my leetle brahther and i had a baby-sitter who would come watch us during the summer because dad worked 3rd (so he was sleeping all day) and mom was going to college. the sitter’s name was Mrs. Owens and she was approximately 400 years old. give or take a few years. she was a nice, old, southern lady, and i remember she was usually humming a hymn or something. she knew a lot about plants and trees. since we lived near a creek (well, ditch, is probably more like it.) we’ve always had tons of dragonflies in the summer. Mrs. Owens always called them Snake Doctors.
did you know that dragonflies can’t walk?

I didn’t know dragon flies couldn’t walk. Ms owens sure could walk though. Remember crossing rainbow drive and hwy 77 with her?!? Sometimes we got to go to West Gadsden cafe in that old green ranchero or el camino, but other than that we walked all over rainbow city.
i know! she hoofed it everywhere.
Oh, I totally FORGOT that people used to call them “snake doctors.” I wonder where that came from.
Pambroghini, i think the deal was that if a snake was injured (like, nearly cut in half) the snake doctor, (maybe cos it’s needle-ish?) would sew the snake back together.
that is my unverifiable folk explanation.
