Damn, Nature. You scary! part IV

Kristie spotted this big guy on our walk at the park this morning. Some folks calls it a cottonmouth. I call it a water moccasin.
It appears (on different sites I’ve looked at. [read: wikipedia]) that cottonmouth and water moccasin are different names for the same type of snake. I’ve heard people call them cottonmouths down here, but I’ve never called them that. I’ve no idea if it’s a regional thing or a generational thing or what. What do you call it?

Dante! That snake was in it’s own house. you can’t kill a snake in it’s own house. Now if it was in your house, or my house, then that’s different.
what about on the track – I’m calling it a target, then…shall I bring my weapon tomorrow? btw, over by Westbrook, they have a sign near the drainage ditch saying ‘Caution, Snakes’. I’m thinking that sign needs to relocate to the park.
i kind of think bringing a gun to the park is illegal? but yeah, they should put up some signs. and maybe a snake bite kit too.

It is the same snake, which is poisonous, but not usually fatal to adults. Baby water mocassins are actually more dangerous because they don’t regulate the amount of venom which they inject (I think they just use it all while the adult will only use some of their venom).
Poisonous snakes do tend to be more aggressive (since nothing in nature tends to want to mess with them). If it is any consolation, snakes are usually more scared of us than we are of them.
PS – Has anyone noticed how much snakes actually stink. Every wild snake I have ever held literally reeks. Odd tidbit, I thought I would throw in.
In Tappahannock, VA (where I’m from) we always called them cottonmouths. I live in Mechanicsville, VA now and they call them water moccasins, so…???
One was in the river near the shore where we were swimming once, and all brave and badass, I went and swung a hoe at it and chopped off its head – then ran away screaming like a cheetah-willy!
